Vitech and CORE actually originated in the university world. CORE began as a college project for Vitech Corporation's founder and president, David Long while a student at Virginia Tech. The initial version was designed as a tool for system engineers to use in the systems engineering training lab. As the tool evolved, he began to see its vast potential. In 1992, he established Vitech Corporation, and in February 1993, Vitech made its first commercial sale of CORE to the National Security Agency (NSA) where systems engineers used CORE software for security profiling.
In 1999, Vitech's University Program officially began at George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia with Professor Dennis M. Buede who needed to conduct a hands-on research project. With that, CORE was introduced to both undergraduate and graduate students where it continues to be taught today.
