Model-Based Systems Engineering (MBSE)

Vitech’s model-based systems engineering (MBSE) approach is an ideal engineering process supporting the delivery of systems consistent with your clients’ needs and their associated stakeholders. Using the technology behind the MBSE empowers engineering teams to define, design, and build a complete, useful and usable system; while lowering risk and engineering support costs.

Vitech WebinarsDuring the design and development phases of a program, systems development activities often fall into four activity domains– requirements, behavior, architecture, and V&V.  The design team needs to work in all four domains concurrently to take advantage of the insights jointly gained and resolving cross-domain issues. Otherwise, when a design team works predominately in one domain at a time, the team may lose sight of these cross-domain issues; thereby, increasing the likelihood of design inconsistencies.

MBSE, combined with the structure of CORE, provides significant and effective communication across all four domains. At the heart of the MBSE is the ability to communicate clearly using a language that reaches out to many stakeholders. Stakeholders have differing experiences, some are subject matter experts and have more expertise in the problem domain than the systems engineers have and using MBSE’s system design language bridges any communications gaps between the stakeholders and the systems engineers. It does so by using a “systems language” to avoid ambiguity and promote consistency of thought and expression across the whole program team.

With MBSE and CORE, you have the ability for all organizations involved in the design and development of a system to work from a single cohesive expression (which we call the “system design repository”).This repository bi-directionally links the elements – or design information – in all four domains. It contains a structured system design language and is the vehicle for constructing, holding and vetting the system model. Effective communication between team members performing various systems engineering tasks is crucial and the system design language and the resulting models enable this communications. The integrated repository generates system views and artifacts supporting communication and the integrated repository are the key to effective system design and model completeness and consistency.

A basic tenet for understanding the working of systems, holds that a system is the product of the interaction of its parts, not the actions of the parts considered separately. Through MBSE and CORE, the design team gains critical insight into the interaction of all components.

Together, MBSE and CORE provide a process and tool for the generation of a complete, consistent, and executable systems design and specification.
