CORE(R) Enterprise 4.0 README.TXT file Please read this document along with the WHATSNEW file before installing CORE 4.0. This file includes information not covered in the documentation. Topics addressed include: * Installing CORE 4.0 * Obtaining a License File * Viewing Supplemental CORE Documentation * Disaster Prevention/Recovery * Important Notes * Reporting Problems/Making Product Suggestions If you have questions after reviewing this document, or if you encounter any problems while installing or using CORE, please contact Vitech Product Support as instructed at the end of this document. Installing CORE 4.0 =================== Required Space -------------- The CORE Enterprise 4.0 Client software requires approximately 82 megabytes of file space. Installing the CORE Software ---------------------------- Before you start, we recommend that you have the following information readily available: (1) The serial number from the back of the CORE CD. (2) The CORE Enterprise 4.0 Server name or IP address, and the port number of the GemStone NetLDI service. (3) The NLM server name or IP address and port numbers if using a NLM. The CORE installation program is a Windows application and must be executed under Windows. Insert the CORE installation CD into your CD-ROM drive. If the CD Browser does not automatically appear on your screen, run Setup.exe from the CD's root directory. Select "Install CORE Enterprise 4.0" from the main setup screen and then select the Enterprise client. You will be guided through the installation process. No previous CORE installation is required to install CORE Enterprise 4.0. Step 1 ------ The installer will prompt you to accept the terms of the license agreement. If you accept this agreement, select YES. If you do not accept this agreement, promptly return this software and the accompanying items (including written materials and other containers) to the place you obtained them. Step 2 ------ The installer will prompt you for your name, company, and serial number. Your CORE serial number is marked on the back of your installation CD case. Step 3 ------ The installer will ask for the directory in which CORE should be installed ("C:\Program Files\Vitech Corporation\CORE Enterprise 40 Client" is the default). DO NOT install CORE 4.0 into the same directory as any existing CORE installation. Step 4 ------ Next, you will be prompted to select the type of setup to run. Complete setup will install CORE completely and with all of the necessary components (recommended for most users). Custom setup will install only those components of CORE that are specified by the user (for advanced users only). Step 5 ------ Next, you will be prompted to select the default paper size used by CORE reports. Options are either US Letter or A4 paper size. Step 6 ------ Next, you will be asked for the following two items: 1) CORE Enterprise Server - the host name or IP address of the machine that will run the CORE Enterprise Server. 2) NetLDI Port - the listening port on the CORE Enterprise Server. Step 7 ------ Next, you will be asked if the network license manager (NLM) will be used for licensing. If you answer yes, you will then be prompted for three pieces of information. 1) Server - the host name or IP address of the NLM server. 2) Port - the listening port on the NLM server. 3) Reply Port - the port on the client machine. It is recommended that you use the default values provided for the Port and the Reply Port. If you have any questions concerning any of these values, please contact your network or systems administrator. Additional Installation Notes ----------------------------- The installation program will create a new program group entry on the start menu with the title "CORE Enterprise 4.0 Client". It contains an icon labeled "CORE Enterprise 4.0 Client". To run CORE, simply click on this menu item. You can also launch CORE Enterprise by double-clicking directly on CORE40E.EXE. Uninstalling CORE 4.0 --------------------- To remove CORE Enterprise 4.0 Client from your system, select Add/Remove Programs from the Windows control panel. Select CORE Enterprise 4.0 Client from the list of applications available to uninstall and click the Remove button. Follow the instructions provided by the installer to remove the application. Obtaining a License File ======================== Before running CORE, a valid license file must be obtained from Vitech Corporation. CORE will not run without a valid license file. The steps required to obtain a license file differ depending upon whether you will be using the floppy key license mechanism (CORE is licensed to run on any machine as long as the associated key diskette is in the floppy drive of that machine), the network license mechanism (CORE is licensed to run on a network), or the node-locked license mechanism (CORE is licensed to run on a single, unique machine). Please review the section applicable to your version. Obtaining a License File (Floppy Key License Mechanism) ------------------------------------------------------- If you have purchased this type of license, two floppy keys are provided with your copy of CORE (a primary key and a back-up key in case of difficulty). A valid license file has already been entered on the primary key diskette. Therefore, the primary key (as shipped) is ready for use. However, the license file for the back-up key has not been provided meaning that the back-up key (as shipped) is not a valid key diskette. The back-up key diskette is provided for use only if the primary key diskette fails. NOTE: It is possible for a key diskette to fail simply because it is a mechanical device. Therefore, we have provided a back-up key to ensure that you can continue to run CORE even if your primary key fails. However, the back-up key will require a different license file than the primary key. If your primary key diskette fails, please contact Vitech Product Support as instructed at the end of this document. At that time, we will provide you with the license file corresponding to the back-up key diskette. A valid key diskette must be present in a machine's floppy drive for that machine to properly run CORE. Therefore, if you wish to run CORE at distinct times on multiple machines (e.g., your office computer and your home computer), you can run CORE by simply inserting the key diskette in the floppy drive and launching CORE. To ensure that multiple machines are not simultaneously running the same copy of CORE using a single key diskette, CORE periodically checks for the presence of a valid key diskette in a floppy drive. If a valid key diskette is not present, CORE will determine that the machine is not currently licensed to run CORE. Obtaining a License File (Network License Mechanism) ---------------------------------------------------- If you plan to use a network token, contact your Network License Manager (NLM) administrator for guidance in configuring your workstation to access a network license. NetTerm for Client Token Administration --------------------------------------- With NetTerm, users can view outstanding tokens and delete any token that is checked out by them. To manually release your token, simply select the token, right click for the popup menu, and select the Kill Token command. The Administrator can use NetTerm at the PC which runs the NLM to release any token. NetTerm is installed on each client PC during the CORE installation. A shortcut to NetTerm is in the Programs>>CORE>>Utilities folder on the Windows Start menu. During the installation, the IP address and port number are set to the specified values. To change these parameters, use the Options>>Network command on the NLM Terminal window. If you are unable to view the NLM information, set these two strings to the correct IP address (or symbolic name) and port. Obtaining a License File (Node-Locked License Mechanism) -------------------------------------------------------- To generate a license request, simply click on the icon titled License Request in the CORE>>Utilities program menu (or run LICREQ.EXE in the CORE directory). Select File>>Generate. Enter the company name and a CORE serial number (from the CORE installation media) in the appropriate fields and press the OK button to generate a license request. Then, select File>>Save to save the request file. After the request has been generated, send an email requesting a license along with a copy of the license request file to Vitech Corporation. This request must include the following: 1) The point of contact for your group including telephone and fax numbers in case there are any questions regarding the request; 2) The make, model, and serial number of the computer on which CORE has been installed; and 3) The CORE serial number installed on the platform specified in (2). Multiple licenses can be included in a single request providing the CORE serial number for each platform is clearly delineated. After the license request has been received by Vitech Corporation, a valid license file will be e-mailed (or faxed) to the point of contact. This file should then be entered exactly as it is received using a text editor such as the Windows Notepad. You must save the new license under the file name CORELIC2.DAT in the CORE directory. Note that the license file will contain no tabs, and the lines will be separated by carriage returns (with no carriage return at the end of the last line). Viewing Supplemental CORE Documentation ======================================= Located in the new CORE 4.0 program group entry on the Start menu are shortcuts to documentation for the COREscript scripting language and the API Interface. Adobe's Acrobat Reader is needed to view this documentation. You can download the latest version of Adobe Acrobat Reader free of charge at http://www.adobe.com. Disaster Prevention/Recovery ============================ There is no recovery log in CORE Enterprise 4.0. All changes are immediately written to the server, so a crash on a client should not result in any loss of data, with the possible exception of the change in progress when the crash occurred. The administrator is responsible for regularly backing up the data on the server. Important Notes =============== The best way to explore the new features of the CORE 4.0 release is to print a copy of the WHATSNEW file and let it serve as your guide while you work with CORE. Using RDT Files From Previous Versions of CORE ---------------------------------------------- CORE 4.0 fully supports importing RDT files from CORE 1.3.1 and later. CORE 4.0 can also export RDT files in 1.3 format and 2.x format to enable interchange with previous versions of CORE. Working with Report Files From Previous Versions of CORE -------------------------------------------------------- CORE 4.0 can read and execute report scripts created in previous versions of CORE. However, report scripts written or modified in CORE 4.0 cannot be used in those versions.
