CORE(R) 8 Server README.TXT file Please read this document before installing CORE 8 Server. This file includes information not covered in the documentation. Topics addressed include: * Installing CORE 8 Server * Migrating a 7.x Project to a 8 Schema * Sharing Data between CORE 7 & 8 * Disaster Prevention/Recovery * Uninstalling CORE 8 Server * Reporting Problems/Making Product Suggestions If you have questions after reviewing this document, or if you encounter any problems while installing or using CORE, please contact Vitech Customer Support as instructed at the end of this document. Installing and Licensing CORE 8 Server ====================================== For detailed installation and licensing instructions, please refer to the "CORE 8 Installation Guide". This document can be obtained from the Downloads section of our website at http://www.vitechcorp.com. CORE 8 Server can be installed on the same host computer as and run concurrently with a CORE 7 Server. If you did not accept all default values when prompted during the CORE 7 Server installation or if you wish to deviate from the default values supplied by the CORE 8 Server installation, you should consult Vitech Customer Support to determine whether a conflict may result in the incorrect operation of one or both servers. It is recommended that CORE 8 Server be installed on a separate machine from your CORE 7 Server. However, we recognize that a second server-grade computer may not be available to many users or that they may not want to undertake the reinstallation of one or the other of the servers during the transition process. Be aware, however, that running both servers simultaneously on the same host may impair performance. Before attempting to do so, please ensure the machine has sufficient memory and disk space. If RAM is limited, the amount allocated to each server may have to be reduced for optimal performance. Contact Vitech Customer Support for assistance. CORE 8 desktop software can also be installed on the same computer as and run concurrently with CORE 7. (The desktop software can also be installed and run on the server.) The CORE 8 desktop software cannot log into the CORE Enterprise 7 Server, nor can the CORE 7 desktop software log into the CORE 8 Server. Migrating an Existing Project to a CORE 8 Schema ================================================ The baseline CORE 8 schemas include revisions to the previous CORE 7 schemas - changes to classes, relations, and attributes. To migrate your project from CORE 7 to a CORE 8 schema, special steps are required. For detailed information on migration, please review the latest "CORE 8 Data Migration Guide" from the Documents section of our website and contact Customer Support for additional guidance and assistance. Of course, CORE 8 includes copies of the CORE 7 schema files, so you may choose to simply maintain your current schema. In this case, simply import your XML file into CORE 8, and CORE will automatically build the project using the appropriate CORE 7 schema. Sharing Data between CORE 7 & CORE 8 ==================================== It is recommended that work on a single project be conducted either entirely in CORE 7 or entirely in CORE 8. However, there are many cases in which project responsibilities are distributed among multiple organizations with different licenses, and project work may need to continue during the transition from CORE 7 to CORE 8. To collaborate on a project using both versions, you need to be aware of the following restrictions: o When porting the project to CORE 8, continue using the CORE 7 schema. o CORE 7 and CORE 8 can use the same .XML file format. The format has been slightly refined and upgraded in CORE 7, but a service pack (SP9) for CORE 7 has been produced to ensure compatability. Ensure that this service pack is installed to enable the exchange of data between installations. o The best practice is to migrate users forward from CORE 7 to CORE 8, never backwards from CORE 8 to previous versions. If work on a project must be divided between CORE 7 and CORE 8, all relevant users and groups should originate in CORE 7 and be imported into 8. Disaster Prevention/Recovery ============================ When the CORE Server is installed using the default options, a Windows task is scheduled that will run the hotBackup script (packaged with the CORE Server) on weeknights at 11pm. These backups are stored in the \CORE80Backups folder. The backup files are named with the current date using the YYMMDDhhmm format. The hotBackup script will delete any files in the \CORE80Backups folder with names in YYMMDDhhmm.dbf format that are more than 7 days old. Vitech strongly recommends archiving the contents of the \CORE80Backups folder on another machine. Please consult your IT organization for advice on what archiving\backup programs you have available and assistance in automating this process. In the event of complete failure of the server machine, if the backups files are available, Vitech Customer Support will assist you in using the latest backup file to restore your CORE Server data. Uninstalling CORE 8 Server ========================== Archive a hot backup of the final state of your CORE 8 repository, should you wish to reinstall it for any reason. To remove CORE 8 Server from your system, select Add/Remove Programs from the Windows control panel. Select CORE Server from the list of applications available to uninstall and click the Remove button. Follow any instructions provided by the installer to remove the application. Reporting Problems/Making Product Suggestions ============================================= If you should encounter a problem with the software (either an error, a deficiency, a feature that works in a manner other than you expected, or a problem with any associated documentation), please notify us via e-mail, phone, or fax as indicated below. Any information you can provide in your report regarding the hardware and software configuration of the host machine, the circumstances in which the problem occurred, conditions to reproduce the problem, and such test data as you can reasonably provide to assist Vitech in reproducing the problem would be greatly appreciated. We hope that you enjoy the new capabilities of CORE 8. All user observations and recommendations are valuable to us.
